Let’s get acquainted with some of the star ingredients in our formulations, meet marshmallow root extract (MRE). And yes, this is the same marshmallow plant from which the fluffy confection gets its name.
Firstly her botanical and plant family names tell us plenty about her actions and properties. In formal quarters, marshmallow is known as Althaea officinalis. Althaea comes from the Greek word “althaino”, which means “to heal or cure”. She belongs to the Malvaceae plant family, which derives its name from the Greek word “malasso” meaning “to soften”. This is particularly appropriate considering that marshmallow is loaded with mucilage – a softening component that forms an emollient, anti-inflammatory gel when in contact with water.
Beginning around 9th century BC, the Greeks used marshmallow root and leaves to heal wounds and soothe sore throats. A balm made from the plant’s sap was often applied to toothaches and bee stings. Marshmallow root as a healing herb was even mentioned in Homer’s Iliad.
Fast forward over two millennia, and we can confirm that the ancient Greeks were definitely onto something. Current research has verified the healing, soothing, cicatrisant, and anti-inflammatory properties of this mucilagenous wonder plant. In addition to mucilage, the root extract contains a number of other ingredients that promote skin health, such as polysaccharides and flavonoids.
Benefits include:
- MRE possesses antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects.
- The anti-inflammatory properties help to soothe irritation as it simultaneously hydrates skin, making it a great choice for people with problem skin, such as sufferers from eczema or rosacea. A review study suggests that its topical application can help with eczema and damage from UV radiation or sun exposure.
- The soothing effect of MRE may also help speed up wound healing. A study found that applying MRE topically helped wounds heal faster whilst providing effective antibacterial effects, in turn preventing infection.

Hence why we’ve included MRE in our Hygieia Facial Cleansing Powder and Epione Therapeutic Bath Soak. Her softening properties are ideal for soothing and calming irritated, reactive or sensitive skins.
